EU Races Ahead With New Internet Satellite Constellation Plans To Rival Elon Musk’s Starlink Service

It’s not the news that tech billionaire Elon Musk would wish to hear but we can confirm that the EU just signed a staggering $11 billion deal for a sovereign satellite constellation service. This means another major direct threat to Musk’s Starlink.

This deal will include a mega 300 satellite launch into low and medium Earth orbits by 2030. Moreover, the bloc wishes the space tech can boost digital sovereignty by rolling out secure commands to the government as well.

The deal was first unveiled in 2022 where discussion about a private-public collaboration was on the cards for Iris. The cost multiplied and today, 61% of all funding comes from public entities like SpaceRise. It entails a satellite giant from France Eutelsat that combined with another leading EU rival OneWeb two years back.

On the other hand, when we look at Elon Musk, he’s already got 6,000 orbiting satellites. It passed the 4 million subscriber mark and most of the deals are major including Royal Caribbean and United Airlines. It’s also making way for a mega T-Mobile phone service that features a direct-to-phone offering.
